Moving Forward Together

As you may have read previously, Retinue is working in partnership with Genesis Housing Association on a mentoring programme.  This initiative - part of Genesis’ wider ‘Volunteer into Employment Programme’ - provides residents and their families with advice and guidance to help them take positive steps towards returning to the workforce.

When I was asked to volunteer as a mentor, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be involved in a programme that helps and encourages people to reach their goals. Without my colleagues’ support and guidance over the last two years, I would not have achieved the career goals that I have. Therefore the opportunity to provide the same advice and help that was offered to me was something that I was only too happy to be a part of.

When I first met my mentee I was a little concerned as she was slightly older than me and I was worried about whether she would take advice from someone my age. This could not have been further from the truth; she was very engaged and took everything on board during our discussions around challenges with the job application process and her lack of confidence in formal interview situations.

I was able to guide my mentee through interview techniques, which I have picked up through my role as a recruitment consultant. In addition to this I talked her through different ways to help her CV stand out, the best way to apply for jobs and how to register with agencies. We have since arranged a second meeting to discuss her progress as she works towards her end goals.

Genesis has successfully delivered its volunteering programme for four years, helping countless residents into employment. Both rewarding for mentor and mentee, volunteering programmes like this provide an excellent opportunity for recruitment companies to become involved and share their expertise.

Retinue will be posting more about the mentoring programme and its success stories over the coming months. To learn more about Retinue, the mentoring programme, or how we can help you with your resourcing needs please email blog@retinue-solutions.com
