Mitie Case Study – Regaining Workforce Control Through a Managed Service Provider (MSP)

Mitie has provided facilities management services since 1987. Today, they are the UK’s leading facilities management and professional services company. Across the UK, their 70,000+ people look after a diverse, blue-chip customer base — from banks and retailers to hospitals, schools, and critical government strategic assets. Their client list includes household names like Lloyds, Primark, Bayer, and Amazon.

Requirement

The client needed to regain control. They had no central visibility or control over contract and temporary recruitment, relying on over 200 staff suppliers charging mark-ups between 12% and 22%.

There was a lack of consistency across recruitment processes, no ability to review temporary workforce data, and limited insight into agency spending.

Retinue Solutions was engaged to deliver visibility across all recruitment costs and improve the quality of temporary candidates while driving compliance and cost efficiency.

Solution

As part of a managed service provider (MSP) approach, Retinue worked in partnership with Mitie to overcome their challenges. Recognising that one model did not fit every part of the business, Retinue offered a two-process solution:

Solution One: Self-Managed Model
Supported by Retinue’s proprietary technology platform, this option empowered hiring managers to directly engage contracted suppliers. All bookings were logged through a centralised online portal, ensuring full visibility of spend and supplier performance while maintaining local autonomy.

Solution Two: Managed Service Provider (MSP) Model
For divisions seeking an end-to-end recruitment process, Retinue delivered a fully managed booking solution, leveraging the wider nGAGE Talent Group to reduce recruitment costs and ensure compliance across the supply chain.

In addressing staff shortages, Retinue helped Mitie establish regional hubs of local suppliers linked to high-demand “hotspot” locations. To reduce off-contract spend, Retinue harmonised supplier terms and conditions and standardised rate structures, ensuring consistency and fairness across the business.
